How are they constructed?
The Stand-Off Pads are built by removing 600mm (2 ft) of soil from the surface. The base of the excatation is then covered with 50mm of sand. The lining material is laid on the sand and turned up around the four sides to ground level. A protection geotextile is placed over the lining membrane to protect it from stone damage.
300mm (1 ft) of subsoil is then back-filled on top of the geotextile. The subsoil is ridged, with ridges 3.5m apart and 200mm high. Slotted 80mm ducting pipe is placed in the trough of each ridge.
The entire area is covered with 200kg/m2 (160-200mm) of 50mm round stone. Lastly, the area is finished off with a covering of 50kg/m2 (200-225mm) of woodchips. Small chips known as butt reduced chips or post plant chips work well.
